It’s frustrating isn’t it?
Everyday you wake up and you drag yourself to work.
Once you’re at work, you grab your first cup of coffee and look at the clock.
You seriously wonder why this darn clock doesn’t seem to move forward.
The best part of your day is around 4 o’clock, when you realize that you only have to push through for a little longer until the day is over.
If this sounds like you, then you’re certainly not alone.
The truth is, the majority of people are not happy with their job and the life they’re living.
In the end, we all want a lifestyle that gives us a sense of meaning, that allows us to spend enough time with the people we care about and that we ENJOY!
What if I told you that you have more control over all of this than you might realize…
It really is possible to live a life where you can’t wait to jump out of bed in the morning. But… achieving this involves something we are naturally scared of. It’s called taking risks.
Below I want to use my personal story to inspire you and show you that sometimes you just have to get out of your comfort zone.
How I quit my job and stepped into a world of uncertainty
I felt like I was living the same week over and over again.
Each day I got up, went to work, then came home, made dinner, watched some TV and went to bed, only to wake up the next morning to go to my boring job again.
I was wondering how I could do this till my retirement.
The same question kept going through my mind, month after month: “Isn’t there more to life than this?”
I was working as a financial project manager and I had bought my own house. It was a job that paid well and offered me a lot of financial security.
But I was missing something…
I missed a sense of meaning and a sense of fulfillment. I wasn’t happy.
One day I was surfing the web and I came across a text that blew my mind. It’s called the “Holstee Manifesto”.
It basically says that life is too short and that you should live your dream and follow your passion.
Maybe you know it, maybe you don’t. Below is a picture of it, just so you know what I’m talking about.
This text inspired me so much.
It made me realize some very important things…
I didn’t like my job. I didn’t feel fulfilled. I wasn’t doing what I loved.
I suddenly had a huge paradigm shift!
I always thought life was about having financial security. Having enough money to pay your bills. Making sure you have enough savings for something that might happen in the future.
Well… I realized it’s not.
Of course, financial security is important. But it’s not the Holy Grail to living a meaningful, fulfilling and happy life.
I realized that if I stayed in my job, it would make me unhappy.
So what did I do?
I quit my job, sold my house and traveled the world for 3 years.
Sounds like a pretty crazy thing to do, right?
Well… it was.
In fact, it was probably the biggest and most scary decision I’ve made in my life.
Was it easy? No…
Was it worth it? A big YES…
I put my house on the market and luckily it was sold within a few months.
After that I bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok to go on a one-year adventure around Asia (something I’ve always dreamt of). After that, I spent the next two years in Australia and New Zealand.
You might wonder if I felt uncertain about my future…
I was terrified.
Taking a risk comes with a big portion of uncertainty.
I remember myself standing on the airport with a backpack on my back. I was feeling so scared to the point that it literally made me feel sick. All I wanted was to go back home and hug my mummy!
But you know what happened?
I had the best time of my life.
I discovered new foods & cultures, met amazing people, made friends for life and saw some of the most amazing things on our planet.
I felt alive!
And the best part of all…
Just when I thought I’d be alone forever, I met the love of my life!
We met in a little bowling alley in Australia.
The strange thing is that I wasn’t looking for the love of my life anymore. I had made the decision to do the things I love and stop searching for somebody whom I could spend the rest of my life with.
And when I started doing that…
I met her.
And as of a few months ago, she is now my wife!
I thought that I’d probably end up old, grey and alone.
No wife, no children, no family life. All things that I really wanted.
This just proves to me that when you start doing the things you love and take a few crazy risks, you open the doors for magical things to happen.
Should you sell your house, quit your job or travel the world?
To be honest…
I am not asking you to sell your house, quit your job or travel the world.
I am sharing my personal story of how I took a BIG risk and how it turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.
I think you can agree that there is a time in everybody’s life were they have to take a risk in order to move forward.
Maybe you want to move to a different city, change your job, have children or end a relationship.
These are all big decisions…and they’re scary!
I was scared when I sold my house and quit my job. It was a BIG risk.
But I know that if I hadn’t taken these risks, my life would have been boring, without color and not exciting.
Of course you have to think things through, don’t take foolish risks. But so often we avoid risks like the plague. We keep complaining about our lives or our jobs but we don’t do anything to change it.
So get out of your comfort zone, once and for all!
Conquer your fears and make yourself feel alive.
It will open up your talents, interests, abilities and dreams.
