A lot of us see happiness as a destination, but I don’t think this is the right way to look at it.

In my opinion happiness is a by-product of engaging in meaningful and fulfilling projects and activities.

The primary focus shouldn’t be to find or pursue happiness.

Below you will find 10 things you can do that have a great side effect… they will make you feel happier.

They are just little things, but they will make a BIG difference in your life.

1. Create clarity for yourself

Take a moment everyday to think about the things you want to achieve in your life.

What are you goals? What do you want your future to look like? How can you move towards your goals? What is your passion? What are your values in life?

Thinking about this will help you to relax and refocus before you jump back into your everyday life.



2. Do something kind for somebody else

Most of the time we are so busy focusing on our own needs and goals.

Of course this is not a bad thing, but sometimes it’s a good idea to shift your focus onto somebody else.

When we constantly seek happiness for ourselves, we may find ourselves feeling rather empty inside and unfulfilled at the end of the day.

Doing a random act of kindness for somebody else however is one of the most powerful things you can do to boost your happiness and feel fulfilled.

Here are some of the things you could do over the next few days to actively show kindness to another person:

  • Do a chore for somebody.
  • Say something nice to somebody you don’t really like.
  • Pick up some trash that people throw on the floor in public places (something I personally do a lot).
  • Donate something that you don’t use anymore.
  • Tell somebody close to you that you really like their company or you could even tell them you love them.

These are just a few ideas. Have a little brainstorm with yourself and get out there to spread some kindness. You’ll be surprised with the positive impact it will have on you.


3. Absorb some wise words

Words are very powerful and they can change your life.

Try to make a collection of the most powerful, inspiring and wise quotes and affirmations that you can find.

Then when things get tough or you feel a little down, you can fall back on your quotes and affirmations to refill your energy tank.

4. Just smile

Did you know that smiling is one of the best stress relievers and that when you smile to somebody it will create a feeling of harmony and peace?

The truth is that you don’t always need a reason to smile…

Just greet somebody you see on the street with a smile. You’ll notice that it’s almost impossible for them not to smile back. And it will put you and the other person in a good mood.

So the only thing you need to remember is to JUST SMILE 🙂


5. Do something nice for yourself

Do you sometimes feel so busy that you forget about yourself?

So often we get caught up in our work and our social life that we don’t have time to do something nice for ourselves.

It’s a good thing to remind yourself that you are worth a bit of attention and that you have to give yourself some love.

And it doesn’t have to be something big. Even doing a small thing for yourself every now and then will give your self-confidence and happiness a big boost.

Here are some ideas of things you could do for yourself:

  • Go for a walk to the park, sit or lie down on the grass, look at the sky and dream away
  • Buy yourself a new piece of clothing
  • Make your favorite meal
  • Listen to your favorite music on a comfy couch
  • Dance around your house like nobody is watching
  • Read your favorite book
  • Start a little vegetable garden (something I just recently did)
  • Meditate
  • Wake up early to see the sunrise

The possibilities are endless… Think of something you want do to and just do it. You deserve it!


6. Observe all the beauty around you

Being in nature is one of the best things you can do to feel happier and more positive.

Get yourself out there and go to a forest, a park or a garden and observe all the amazing things around you. Smell the flowers and trees, watch the birds fly by and watch the squirrels hop from tree to tree.

Try to really connect with nature and appreciate its beauty.


7. Stretch out your body in the morning

Have you ever noticed that animals always stretch just after they wake up?

For us humans stretching is also important, but most of the time we forget about it.

Stretching will bring balance into your day and it will make you feel more relaxed.

So tomorrow morning when you wake up, try to stretch out. All you have to do is put your hands above your head and stretch as far as you can. Hold this for about 20 seconds and then release. You can repeat this as many times as you like.


8. Count your blessings

A lot of the times we tend to focus on negative emotions or things that we don’t have.

This is a mindset that can cause you stress, anger, jealousy, frustration or anxiety.

Rather than focusing on the negative things or things that you don’t have, try to focus on what you’re grateful for.

Most of the time we get so caught up in our daily lives that we don’t realize that we have so many things to be grateful for.

Take a little moment everyday to think about what you appreciate in your life. It will have an amazing impact on your feeling of happiness and your mood.

See it as an imaginary painkiller you can take to get rid of your negative emotions or a negative mindset.


9. Try to switch between action and reflection

It’s important to find a balance between being busy doing something and taking time to just reflect.

If you’re constantly in action mode and trying to get things done, you’ll eventually feel drained. We need time to reflect on our experiences in order to move forward in life and grow as human beings.

On the flip-side we also can’t be in reflection mode all the time. You will get caught up in your thinking and you won’t get anything done.

Try to find a balance between the two. You can try to find a way to remind yourself everyday that you have to switch between them in a healthy way.


10. Focus on your breathing

Taking 5 minutes a day to focus on your breathing will instantly calm you down and fill up your energy tank.

It is a wonderful thing to do when you feel stressed, anxious or overwhelmed.

Just sit down in a quiet, peaceful place and focus on your breathing for 5 whole minutes.
