18 ways on how to express yourselfYou are probably reading this because you don’t know how to express yourself.

I have personally felt frustrated because I didn’t know how to express my feelings. Often I felt as though there was nothing I could say or do to make other people understand the depth of how I felt.

Luckily, I have discovered some great practical and creative ways that we can all use to express ourselves. And most of them can also be a lot of fun!

1.    Create a sculpture of your feelings

Use clay, recycled materials, paper mache etc. If your feelings are something that you want to let go of, put your sculpture somewhere where you will see it everyday. When you feel ready to let go of those feelings, rip it up, stomp on it, burn it, throw it in the trash…what ever you like!

2.    Open up a dictionary and find a list of new words that help you how to express your feelings

Here are some of my favourite words that I like to use to express myself. You might like to use them to.

Pensive – Deep in thought with a hint of sadness

Apathetic – Void of feeling; not susceptible of deep emotion; passionless; indifferent

Jubilant – Feeling or expressing great joy and triumph

Nostalgic – A sentimental longing for the past

Pessimistic – A tendency to have the most unhopeful view

Optimistic – A tendency to have to most hopeful view

Lethargic – A lack of energy, feeling unwilling and unable to do anything

Sometimes we find it difficult to word our feelings. We might feel like we do not know how to communicate them to others or that we do not even understand the way we feel ourselves.

By looking up new expressive words, you may discover new words that reflect your exact feelings! This will make it much easier to express yourself.

3.    Draw your feelings

Use shapes, colours and images to reflect how you feel. Our minds have different ways of perceiving things so colours and shapes hold different meanings for us too.

Red might represent love or passion whereas for others it may reflect evil or hate. It is the same with shapes. Pointy shapes may represent evil or something dangerous while circular objects may feel more positive, safe or friendly.

4.    Paint your feelings

Throw paint on a canvas, use different brush strokes to create different shapes and textures, be free and let the painting speak your feelings. You may want to focus on just one feeling or otherwise a whole bunch of feelings at the same time.

5.     Dance your feelings

Use your body movement, rhythm and music to express how you feel.

6.    Sing your feelings

Write a song, sing a song, improvise different sounds and melodies that reflect your current state.

7.    Yell your feelings, scream your feelings

There is something liberating about just letting it all out in one gasp of air. Especially when you have a big build up of feelings that you have kept hidden for a long time.

8.    Start a blog or website

This will provide you with an emotional and creative outlet. You will be able to discuss subjects and issues that you may not feel comfortable or be able to discuss elsewhere. It’s a great tool if you don’t know how to express yourself.

9.    Exercise

If you are feeling frustrated, let the frustration out as you run as fast as you can on the treadmill. If you are feeling angry, feel the anger as you push up those heavy weights. If you feel excited and positive, let that energy out as you do a body combat class or jump that skipping rope.

Express your feelings by releasing your energy and use your body to let out your feelings. Exercise is a great way to release deep or intense emotions.

10.  Make a brainstorm of your feelings

Often we find it difficult to express our emotions because we don’t quite understand exactly what we are feeling and why.

Brainstorming your feelings will help to surface and create a fuller picture of your different feelings. This will help you to feel more able to express them or talk about them with others.

11. Talk to others about your feelings

Talk about your feelings with your friends and other people. Just talking about how you feel will help you to feel like you are letting your feelings out.

Talking about your feelings also helps to bring clarity and put things into perspective helping you to better understand and express yourself.

12.  Join a group of some sort

Join a sports team, an art class, a singing group, a band or some other kind of social or community group.

Sometimes we just need to be around other people. When we are alone or feel isolated our thoughts and feelings can become blurred. People help us to understand who we are, to put things into perspective and express ourselves more constantly as we regularly engage with others.

13. Role play

Act out your feelings through drama or role play. Act out a scenario and become a character that matches the way you feel. You can also act as yourself, pretending that it is really someone else you are role-playing. This will help you to truly express yourself without feeling uncomfortable or too vulnerable.

14. Express your feelings through a poem or a story

15.  Keep a journal and write your feelings in it everyday

Write down exactly how you feel. For example; I feel scared, I feel excited, I feel embarrassed.

16. Find colours, tastes, smells, shapes and sounds that reflect the way you feel

17. Write a letter

Write a letter to someone about a problem that you are experiencing and how it makes you feel (you don’t have to actually send it!) Then formulate a question that you would really like to know the answer to.

When you are done, write a reply letter answering the question as if you were giving advice to another person. This will help you to gain clarity and to express and explore your feelings.

18.  Exaggerate your feelings!

Make them appear bigger in your mind. Then express those feelings (write them down, draw them, dance them etc) By exaggerating your feelings, you will be more able to vent your feelings without holding back. Often when we don’t understand our feelings completely, we feel reluctant to express them fully.

Exaggerating your feelings will help you to let it all out!   Now that you have a long list of new ways to express yourself, you can finally let it all out! Express yourself, be creative and have fun while doing it.
